A Gift for my Aunt

Today, I talked with my aunt and found out that she received her birthday present from me, which means that I can now show it to you! And, what's even more important - she loved it!

My aunt (my dad's sister) and I have been really close all our lives, much more like good friends and sisters than aunt and niece. The time spent with her and my uncle growing up (and still now) are among the best memories I have. We cook, we bake, we eat, we talk, we shop a little, we admire each others gardens, we laugh, we giggle, we laugh and then giggle some more...

When I was painting this, I wanted to somehow convey the essence of how I see her. My aunt is a gardener at heart. I think that is her true vocation - she has such a gift with her garden and used to love being in it until a proliferation of deer ticks have made it hard for her to enjoy it (if any of you know of any methods to get rid of ticks in the yard, let me know) - her yard has lots of them. She still gardens a lot, but not without long pants, long sleeves and lots of bug spray.

So, in my painting, I wanted to have flowers and trees and butterflies because I will always associate those with her. I know the young woman looks very pensive, and that's also a side of her - she has a contemplative nature, which is one of the reasons we've always connected so deeply.

I loved painting it and am very happy she loves it, too!

  11. Good Morning, Silke!
Of course, I'd look a little silly (a big guy like me), but I'd giggle with you! I love to laugh...
I love this new unveiling, the gift for your Aunt. I love the colors and textures and layers and faint background images. It just makes me feel very good. I also like the pensive look because it gives balance to all of the delight going on around her.
Now, about the ticks... Ewwww! I don't know about how to rid them, but wearing appropriately covering clothing is definitely a good idea.
Hmmmm, there's a new thing that you might use to find the answer to your question... something I just heard of recently... I think its called Google. ;)
    Delightful as usual, Silke

  18. What a sweet gift! I especially love the butterfly on her chest and her serene expression.

How sad about the ticks--I hope she finds a way to overcome them. I'm a terrible gardener, so I always admire anyone who has "the touch." :)
