They are not the most beautiful of fruit, but for me personally there is nothing better! I've visited countries where the fig trees grow on the side of the road and we would just stop and eat them to our heart's content. That we get to have a now big fig tree (I cannot believe how huge it has gotten in just four years) in our own yard still feels incredibly exotic to a girl from northern Germany!
Now we are trying to figure out if we should just eat them as they ripen - always just a few at a time - or collect them to use more of them at one time in a recipe. What do you think?
I think both ways,lol.I loveee figs and I love dates as well.But Im greek so I guess that says it all.They are so yummy.

ReplyDeleteEat or save - I quess that depends in part how long it would take for enough to ripen to use for a recipe. You wouldn't want them to go bad while waiting...
Oh, nice! How fun to have a fruit tree right in your own yard. I have no idea what to do with figs, but I know that you & Daniel will enjoy them, whatever you decide to do!

ReplyDeleteOh Silke, you must enjoy them all alone...they're scrumptious!! I grew up with them. My grandparents, who lived across the river in Juarez, Mexico (unfortunately, one of the most violent cities in the world now...I miss going to the open markets there and the food and wonderful friendliness that abounded back in the day), had a garden with 2 fig trees. We would spend our summers eating fruit off their trees and bushes and I would go to the market and buy wonderful Mexican mangoes..the best as far as I'm concerned and eat those juicy, sweet fruits on the patio...lovely memories.
ReplyDeleteI say eat them as they ripen or maybe in a fruit salad? I fell in love with figs here in America too...I kept buying them every chance I get. Living in California I had the green and the black/dark purple varieties to chose from and I went mad about them until I learned about the figwasps and now I'm kind of not thinking about it anymore...
ReplyDeleteI discovered persimmons which I also never heard of in Germany. I had a totally ripe and mushy one last year from my friend's tree (that I almost didn't eat because of the texture) but when I did OMG - I was in heaven...it was like eating honey...sooooooo gooood! I can't wait now till they're ripe again. I hope I don't learn anything about them now to spoil it for me ;-)
(I know, I'm weird!) Sometimes I don't need to know everything about the foods I eat.
Love them too - and I love the colour and the tree itself.

ReplyDeleteWe had fig trees on the side of the road where I lived in Georgia too! I say eat them as they ripen!...and take a clue from the birds as to when to collect a lot for later. The birds become more numerous the closer the time comes to pick them...But they'll be gone fast if you let the birds get to them first!!! LOL

I am reading Anne's comment. She said she is jealous. Isn't that a funny word? Just look at it by itself "jealous" Some people down here say they are "yealous". Well, I love fig newtons. Are they from figs? My SIL makes fig salad. I started eating figs au naturale last summer. How are you Silke? I scrolled through your blog earlier. You and daniel are the cutest couple, very attractive.

HAHAHAHA! Yes! Indeed! The Viking bought me three half gallons because they are seasonal and available only during the summer in my favorite brand. I had a bowl this evening. I hope you feel better soon dearest, Silke! As for me, no work today, not on call but a project starts tomorrow. I am ready and luckily not a big workload yet. The others are coming but honestly, I love my work. I just wish I had more time off to paint and draw. Time to fold the laundry and do another load! Tsup! Tsup!

ReplyDeleteHi Silke! I'm originally from Louisiana and we had a HUGE fig tree right outside my bedroom window. I could open the window and reach out and pick them right off the tree! There's nothing much better! My mother made the absolute best fig preserves!

ReplyDeleteOoooh love figs! I have a little fig tree trying to survive in a pot for who knows how long!! I will be planting it soon as I figure it has survived this long it deserves a good life! Whatever you do though use figs soon as I went one time and got figs from a friend of my mother-in-law. Within two days you could say I had fig wine!!!
ReplyDeleteOh so yummy! I had a couple of fresh ones this week (imported so hugely expensive). I bought them to paint as well as eat, so got my money's worth! Had them grilled with gorgonzola cheese and a balsamic dressing!! I also love dried figs to snack on!
