Welcome to My Studio!

About a month ago, I had shown some before and after photos of my studio and the talented Vicki of "2 Bags Full..." suggested I sign up for "Where Bloggers Create II" at My Desert Cottage. Click here to see what it's all about!
Yesterday, I almost backed out because my studio really isn't anything special. It's more functional than anything, and here's why!
It took me 42 years to figure out that I wanted to paint. And when it finally clicked, I didn't want to waste another minute making an elaborate space for myself. So, I repurposed one of our guest rooms. This bookshelf holds some supplies and my creative and inspiring books,
these few little plastic drawers are filled with paints, paper and supplies,
and this surface was created very simply by a plywood board held up by three filing cabinets. Here you can see all my gel mediums and varnishes, plus old tea containers filled with pens and other goodies.
I use one of Daniel's old portable drawing tables as my small work space. It works perfectly for me because I am one of those people who can get forever sidetracked by making a beautiful work space and actually never do any work. Plus, when I have too many options at my disposal, I get paralyzed and also end up doing nothing.
This way, I have just enough supplies, just enough space that I can keep it simple, keep it clean and - above all - a space where I can paint, paint, paint!

Thank you all so much for visiting! To see many more creative spaces, click here! You won't be disappointed...

P.S. Someone asked about the colorful dolls/figures on the wall. We've brought back many of them from our travels to Oaxaca, Mexico. The faces are made from coconut shells and they are all painted in bright, happy colors with many different designs.

  1. This is a *perfect* studio Silke! Realizing what you need as opposed to massive space that looks like a magazine layout give you the time necessary to CREATE! Brava!
It is still lovely, and you have everything close (which is a biggie for me).
And yes, the more choices, the less I do becuase I dither!

    XXOO!!

  3. I like your creative space, Silke. I'm contemplating converting my bedroom into a studio because I don't sleep in my bed (I sleep on the recliner due to my bad back) and would have a more orderly living space for unexpected guests or surprise "inspections." (buy, humbug!)

Happy creating and happy weekend, my friend :-)

  4. Thank you for sharing your creative space, Silke. Forgive me if you have already mentioned them - but I noticed those interesting dolls hanging from the wall. Very pretty. I enjoyed seeing where you create your beautiful paintings. :) Have a wonderful weekend! Theresa

  5. Love your studio! I had an entire room as a studio but it was too much so I just set up a space in our dining room. It's so sunny and I love it and use it so much more.

  10. Aaaw! This is wonderful. If it were mine, I'd hide there all day and recline in that comfy looking bed and read. I will also draw in bed. I may not even use the desk at all. This is perfect! I have nothing! Today I used the kitchen table. Tonight, I use the bed. Hahahah!

  13. Silke I have read all about you on your blog for a long time now and this space is perfect for you, you are not the showy, silly, frilly, kinda lady that wants or needs an over decorated art room, you create wonderful things from that space and the fact that once you realized what you wanted to do you just got on and did it, makes it truly special!

    Hugs

p.s. that bed looks so comfy, I would lounge about on that all day ;)

  14. Hello Silke :)

Oh, it's wonderful that I arrived here in time to see your lovely studio... You're lucky to have a room for yourself, while I've very much like Ces. Today I could be on my drawing table, tomorrow it could be the bed, and the next? Hhm, the floor doesn't seem too bad either! (hugs)

  21. It's a lovely studio Silke!! I can picture you in there creating!! I hope you win some goodies. Yes, your studio looks like you work in there, which is so nice. Some of them are sheer eye-candy, but I can't fathom how any work gets done in such a pristine place! I have paint splattered everywhere my studio!! And I needed color, lots of it to keep me energized!!
    Thanks for sharing lovely lady!!

  22. Thank you all for your supportive comments for my quite austere creative space. While looking at some of the other blogs and their spaces, I developed a little studio envy. But I guess mine works for me and that's what's important...

And already tonight it is not nearly as tidy anymore as it looks on these photos! That's life!!

    Much love, Silke

  30. I LOVE your studio! It is cozy, and the limited space forces you to keep it rather tidy. I also found from living overseas that being limited in space or supplies can really bring out the creativeness and resourcefulness in you!

  31. Your studio is beautiful! I wish I had that much space. :)

  32. I wish... I could keep my glitter in order- just like your nice clean orderly space!

I am of German descent also, but I am now just learning the "house frau" thing! I actually am loving it, I am hooked on Brocante Home.
When I create, I explode in a glittery mess onto any surface unlucky enough to not have stuff on it.
So be happy with being tall and beautiful, and a painter that does lovely work without even making a mess!
    Thanks for having us over!
    Sparkly Hugs,

  37. Right away the lovely color of your walls grabbed my attention. {And your yummy paintings!} I think you nailed this whole concept of what a working area should be for each person...it should be what works, what reflects each individual, or makes each person happy! But I love your transparency in sharing that just before the event you were having second thoughts. Someday ALL of us, with enough practice will allow ourselves to be who we are. Period. Xo, Sue

  38. The important thing is that you found something you love to do and you made yourself a space to do it. I think your space looks perfectly perfect for you! And by the way, I love the wall color. Thank you for sharing.

  39. Your studio is great and I like your blog very much. I especially liked your post about your wishes - I am with you on so many. It irks me that short people get the best clothes; I love pretty things and jewelry but when Iput them on I feel like an oaf or an imposter or something, real artists do things I can't even begin to think of - and on and on and on. I am looking forward to coming back to your blog again and again. And by the way, I love your painting!

  40. Well I think you have a great space.. I love the color on your wall, And like you say if you spend to much time on decorating the room, when would you have to to play with your paints..I alway think a room is alway a work in progress... I have just gather junk over the years and slowly put it together.. Im talking years.. and years.. and alot of my decor is stuff I have made.. So be prode you have a nice little studio. I looks great! Hugs, Linda

  41. Silke your studio is perfect. It is a space for you to follow your heart and do what you love. What could be more perfect than that? I want you to know your post about your wishes really caught my eye when I arrived. I read the whole thing. I could relate with almost everything you talked about. We are very much the same. I have one thing to say... YOU ARE AN ARTIST! And don't let anyone tell you otherwise! (including yourself) I'm so glad you finally found your passion for painting. And I'm happy your shared your studio with all of us. Thank you.

  44. I think it's wonderful that you realized what you wanted to do and set up a dedicated space to it period! Some people work better without a lot of distractions as far as "prettying" up their creative space. I think that whatever works for you makes it the perfect space.

  45. I love those colorful art dolls on your wall! Bravo to you for carving out a creative niche to realize your painting dreams! Thank you for sharing your art and your creative haven.

  48. I think your studio is great. I've seen very fancy, very minimal, very pretty and everything else. I think the thing that makes a space great is that it works for the person there.

I have seen wonderful storage ideas in so many places.

Like you I have loads of books. Love them.

    Really enjoyed your blog.

    Beautiful work.

I have only been blogging for about 3 wks but I would be honored if you would stop by for a visit at http://scrappingwithsherry1.blogspot.com Take care~ Sherry

Kudos to you for jumping in with both feet when you decided to paint. Visiting your Flickr gallery, you can feel the enthusiasm you have for your art. Love that you use so much color and interesting background elements. :D
