Today, I spent a good bit of time in my studio and worked on three different paintings. First, this little sketch, where I just had fun playing with color and working rather fast.
Then, I worked on the commissioned piece, which is progressing nicely. I asked myself why it is that it takes me so much longer when I paint something specific for someone else. And think it's because I switch from the creative to the analytical part of my brain - I think too much because I want it to be perfect! And then, of course, it takes longer. However, I want it to look great, so I do take more time for it! I should have it done in the next day or two.
And lastly, I decided what to paint on the larger background I had prepared (you can see it here). I stared at it forever and finally, I just took a charcoal pencil and started drawing an outline. Sometimes I just have to make a quick decision and go with it, otherwise the possibilities are too endless for me!
So, three different paintings, and three different processes. I find that fascinating! Do you have similar experiences?
Wishing you all a most wonderful Sunday!!
P.S. Head on over to Daniel's blog if you want read his latest story and illustration about his beginnings as an artist...
I am so envious of you and Manon. You are cranking up these magnificent artwork left and right!!! I too love to wake up to my friends' comments and you always make me smile. I will try to leave you a message at night so you will wake up to it in the morning!
ReplyDeleteMy painting is waiting. I must go. Oh... about Brownies...
HAHAHAH! Oh Silke. I just love you. You make me smile all the time. NO! I need to make a pilgimmage. A girl Scout, not adult, achieves a badge when she get there. Too bad I don't get any badges any more, just a lot of smiles. We may go sometime this year, never know!
Silke, I am loving the color palette on your latest lady! This is a beautiful combination of colors, and one that I would never have thought of. I think this painting looks a lot like you! I know people have commented on that before, but I think she really does. (Of course, they are all you...). I'm glad you've had fun doing art today. I've got some creative projects I want to get to this week -- I'm going to start on Valentines! Something to look forward to.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work...cute haircut she has there, too :)
ReplyDeleteI can relate, I create best when there is absolutely no pressure or expectations or deadline.
Glad we found one another Silke...
enjoy your day!
xo
The contrasts in the painting are lovely!!!
ReplyDeleteI, too, find commission work a mixed blessing.
First, I love the money.
Second, I usually agonize over the work.
What we produce out of our head, no matter how long it brews, is strictly ours. It's something we are in search of, a need to express, and have figured out how to do it to our satisfaction.
A commission, on the other hand, is attempting to delve into the expectations of another human, and no matter how much they like/love your work they have seen, you still are not sure they will love the piece you are producing.
Am I blithering? Or does it make sense?
Liturgical commissions keep me in paint, which keeps me happy. But I agonize over the liturgical sewing commissions! (eventhough they have always been beautiful installed)
It's our artist "switch" in overdrive I guess.... <:)
XXOO!!
Anne
Thanks for the comment on the liturgical work Silke!
ReplyDeleteI have found---and this may be my lack of attention span showing---that when I am working a commission, I keep a very simple collage or painting, or a *something* that is strictly for me in the works. Even if it is gessoing canvas to use later....I can run away for a few minutes for *me time* where my creative brain wanders, then it is back to the commissioned work.
It might not work for you, but if you get to a stuck point, I highly recommend trying it!
You GO GIRL!!!
XXOO!!
Anne
Another lovely painting Silke - the colours look great! This painted lady reminds me of you so much :D
ReplyDeleteShe is so pretty Silke! and i agree with your commenter that says she looks like you, i think that's so interesting the way art can really look like it came from the person doing it.
ReplyDeletei am so interested in this process you talk about, layering paint and using all different mediums and textures and things. i've only ever used watercolor and pen and ink, so it's all so new to me. i really love it and hope to get up the nerve to try it myself.
i do know just what you mean about doing something commisioned (makes me freeze probably from fright!) vs. doing it out of desire to create (when inspiration strikes).
i'm on my way over to meet daniel now! have a lovely sunday evening you two!
xo lori
Lovely piece Silke!! I like the free flowing background on this one.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your very kind comments earlier! Yes.... it is crackle paste at the bottom of the piece!!
xo
Glad to see what you've been working on. Love the colors. I'm drawn to pinks and reds especially during these days of grey skies. There is nothing like creating for helping a "blah" mood, glad it works for you to.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful piece.
ReplyDeleteAlmost nothing I create is what it starts as :)!
I love this painting - it reminds me of a portrait done of my many years ago with the same hair and expression.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful Silke - I love the color-play!
whatta beautiful painting.
ReplyDeletei love her hair!
I love the pinks and greens and I especially love her bangs. The colors jump out at you.
ReplyDeletelove this painting....great colors!!
ReplyDeletei can say that i completely agree with you regarding when you just paint to paint versus painting for someone else. i am so hard on anything i create for someone else...i just want them to LOVE it so much!
happy sunday to you.
Silke! She is GORGEOUS!!! I love the use of colors. Just lovely. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful use of colours, Silke!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful painting Silke... You are really getting into colour and I love that about your new work. I like this ladies multicolored hair. She is great fun!:)

Oh du Glückliche!
ReplyDeleteYou have a studio, it must be wonderful to have so much place to store the material and to work in.

Wonderful, Silke! I love the colour play on this piece. I love your whole outlook on creativity and life! Keep being the amazing bright star that you are. xx
ReplyDeleteHow I love you Silke. I love the pictures and the previous post with all of your neat gifts and the crystal and angels.
ReplyDeletexoxo
I love the playful style in this painting and the colours. I also thought it looked like you. I have only done a couple commissioned things and felt sometimes almost catatonic about working on them...like fear of disappointing was making me unable to do anything but stand/sit and stare at blank paper or canvas.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right about switching between the two sides of our brain...I'm much more an impulse, instinct painter and meeting a requirement or a deadline hobbles me. Not sure how to change that.
Thanks back to you for your recent lovely comment at my blog...I am the same way with checking the blog several times each day. :D
Lovely, Silke! The background is so playful ~ and it truly suits the portrait. Nice job! Theresa :)
ReplyDeleteAAAACK! I overslept today and had to go to work so I was not ablt o make all my rounds! Good morning. How are you?
ReplyDeleteGoodness, you are really getting some nice compliments, Silke & you certainly deserve it. This piece is awesome. I LOVE the colors, too.
ReplyDeleteI adore your paintings! They are so beautiful and expressive. Reminds me a lot of vintage folk art. You are very talented.
ReplyDeleteLove, Catherine
This painting is one of my favorites, everything about it...and that hair!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how to draw but your site inspires me to try..to create...to make something flow out of my heart onto paper. Love your work. Sarah
ReplyDeleteYou go girl, the colour and light hearted splashes are great. Love you're mixed media art too ready for you're commission. I love to see what you paint for others too. I can see you have put even extra work into them. All you're girls are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDaniel's story about the love for art and how it began is such a nice start to finding his talent, I think Must of been born with.
Have you got Kelly Rae Roberts art book?
Have an awesome day!
Huge Hug!
Julie
I am in awe of artists, Silke - one of the reasons I love your blog! My creativity consists of writing & cooking but my painting...hmmm, an absolute disaster! The only thing I can relate to, commission wise, is when someone asks me to make a special cake. I always stress so much about it, even though I've been baking professionally for over 20 years! It matters SO much, so I understand a little of the pressure you must feel! I have also modelled for the past 12 years for a life class, which I love doing, and it's increased my respect for those who paint & draw even more! Happy Monday xox Rachel
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the colors and magic in her eyes! Happy wishes with your commissioned piece. That's very exciting!
ReplyDeleteOh, you all! All those lovely comments and compliments!! I also love everything you have shared about your creative processes! It's so helpful and I am so very happy I have you all to share my creative life with!! It's something I had never expected from this "blogging thing."
ReplyDeleteThank you all!! Much love, Silke
