Greens from the Garden & Ayurveda

A couple of days ago, I had to use some collard greens from the garden, plus our arugula, which is starting to flower.
So I cooked the collard greens with some onions and added balsamic vinegar, made a salad from the arugula and then added some carrots from a recipe from The Ayurvedic Cookbook by Amadea Morningstar. I bought this cookbook about 20 years ago (she also has a cookbook that is geared toward the western taste and less Indian, but I love the other one best).
Over the years, it has probably been my most used cookbook. I got it right after seeing my first Ayurvedic practitioner and learning about Ayurveda. After I found out about my body type (click here to read more about all that),  I read many books back then and learned much about it. Now I don't follow it religiously at all, but I know exactly what to do when I feel out of balance.
For me, it's the most useful system of keeping my body and my emotions balanced. Have any of you had any experiences with Ayurveda?

On another note, thank you for all your great comments on my last blog post. I am really enjoying figuring out the ups and downs and ins and outs of living a creative life and your help is greatly appreciated!!

And...it seems that the bluebird couple is finally making the birdhouse their own. Although we have yet to see them move in any "furniture". I'll keep you posted.

Wishing you a wonderful Sunday!!

P.S. For those of you who went to check out the Ayurveda site, took the test and told us in the comments about your body types, I am mostly Pitta and Vata with very little Kapha, which I am always trying to increase... Right now, during the winter/spring my Vata tends to be too high and in the summer it's my Pitta - never a dull moment...

  1. Ich wollte mich damit immer mal beschäftigen, aber dann ist es in der Hektik doch wieder untergegangen. Ich sollte das echt mal angehen!

  6. Oh how interesting. When school is on break I will have to read the site in depth. When I started Wt. Watchers a few years ago I began to think of food as fuel and how it would make me feel, rather than comfort. Hello, my name is Deborah and I am a sugar junkie! Happy Sunday, Oh Beautiful One. **blows kisses** Deb

  7. I'm a PITTA!:) -

Your scores are Vata: 2 Pitta: 6 Kapha: 2
Based on your results, you are a PITTA:

    Pitta Characteristics
Mind: Sharp, intellectual, direct, precise, discerning
    Body: Medium build, warm, muscular
    Skin: Sensitive, flush, acne-prone
Hair: Tendency towards early graying or thinning
Appetite: Strong, can eat just about anything, anytime
    Routine: Very precise and organized
Temperament: Passionate, driven, courageous, strong sex drive, good leader
Conversation Style: Speaks to convey a point
Shopping Style: Spends on luxury items

Can't say I agree with the part about my hair or spending habits but it was a very interesting test nonetheless. Your meal looks delicious.

  12. Your colorful feast is a treat for the eyes as well as the taste buds!

Even the universe expands and contracts. It was beautiful the way you likened it to breathing -- expansion, then contraction. The waves you go through, then, is like life, breathing.

    Happy Sunday, dear Silke!

  15. It looks delicious! Although your arugula looks different than the kind I am accustomed to. And - help, Silke - what are collard greens?

  17. Your dish looks so good and healthful. I wish I had a garden. I'm trying my luck at some container lettuce and tomatoes this year - I also found some Kohlrabi seeds that I will try to grow in a big planter that I have.

I often accredit eating my veggies for my still being still alive. Albeit I'm overweight, my blood work always comes out ok - at least it has surprised my doctor thinking I must have diabetes or at least high cholesterol, but my love for fresh veggies and fruits has sustained me and has given me the strength and balance to keep on ticking...I crave vegetables and if I have to go without a few days(especially raw ones) I actually get cranky ;-)
I believe that good nutrition is the cornerstone of a healthy life. I learned that growing up in Deutschland and my Papa is a big time veggie lover! He gets excited over a great tomato the same way I do :-)

  18. It looks like I am a Kapha, and it seems I am doing just about everything wrong! Oh, dear. I will have to give this some thought... It's a good time for changes. Maybe I can incorporate some of the advice for Kaphas that I found online.

  19. This looks absolutely delish! Thank goodness my husband loves veggies, I can try this. I am Kapha with some Pitta, husband is like you. Can't go wrong with vegetables and I am so jealous that you are picking from your garden, it will be a long time until we do, but the wild food will show up in March. Thanks for sharing. xox Corrine
