Background Work

I am working on a new piece on watercolor paper, the largest for me so far at 15x22 inches. I wanted to take a picture of it at this stage with all the pretty papers that caught my fancy, because once I start painting on it, who knows what's still visible at the end... I thought you might enjoy seeing it at this stage as well.

I've been working on a few backgrounds (the rest of them in a 5x7 in. small format). With all of them I am at the stage of not knowing where they will take me. And with that comes the tiny thought: "What if I don't know what else to do with this? What if I've run out of ideas?" I have to admit that I have that thought before almost every new piece, but once I get into the flow of the art, the doubt disappears and is replaced by the joy of creating and a certainty of every next step that needs to be taken.

I don't know about you, but for me that is a good reminder for life in general (I tend to be quite the worry wort) - to just keep going with the flow and each next step will reveal itself in due time.

How about you? Do you all sometimes wonder if you know what to do with your next piece of art? Or is it always clear to you? Do you sometimes plan to take your painting in one direction and it ends up somewhere completely different?

Well, stay tuned for this one and several others as ignore that tiny thought and continue on...

  4. enjoying seeing your papers hanging up to dry. my mixed media pieces rarely go the way that i plan them. they tend to just progress and develop all on their own. i do a great deal of experimentation where i say i wonder what this would do and then just try it. it makes it all fun and interesting. i worried a for a while about making art to sell. now i just make art as a hobby and if it sells that's just an extra joy. looking forward to seeing what creativity flows from you next!

  5. Lovely papers! I want to see what happens next! I rarely know where a piece will go when I get started. I often call my paintings "subconcious paintings" because they are not dictated by consious will. For me, it works best if I just let it happen.

  10. Hi! Thank you so much for reading my blog and leaving such kind comments. I'm delighted to have been introduced to your work as well. I'm always amazed to find such similar thoughts/worries from fellow artists. It's encouraging to know I'm not the only one wondering about these things!

I'm constantly switching between planned out art and more intuitive pieces. I find that if I plan too much, I lose the passion--I don't take enough risk within the piece. Of course, I have big flops more often in the pieces where I wing it. :)

Thanks again for stopping by. I look forward to seeing more of your work!
