A Little Postcard

This year, my good friend, Beth, and I started exchanging handmade postcards at the beginning of each month, which has been really fun! I sometimes have trouble getting mine done in time, but Beth usually gets my postcard before the 15th of the month...

This little painting I did on thick 300 lb watercolor paper with a mixture of paper collage from an old recipe book and one of my mother's cookie recipes, some fun stamping with Q-tips and shelf liner and then the acrylic painting of the girl. I gave her a coating of matte varnish and sent her through the mail just like that. Seems that she arrived in good shape!

I'm still working on my bigger painting and am not making much progress. Yesterday, in a bout of frustration, I painted over the whole thing to start over again. We'll see how it goes today. Do you ever have paintings that just don't turn out the way you envisioned them?

Well, I'll have more to show you tomorrow, so be sure to check back! And, if you haven't yet, make sure to enter my giveaway!!

  1. What a great idea, to exchange cards! Your card turned out great Silke!

And, yes.....MANY times my work doesn't turn out how I'd hoped. I've sanded and repainted a canvas several times :) The abstract canvas I have now used to be an angel. She just wasn't the beauty I had envisioned! LOL I wish I could 'do over' some of my canvases that I applied beeswax to. Not sure how to go about that!

  2. So sweet, I am off to the post office! Yay! I still am in awe of her and cannot wait til she graces our home! Blessings dear one.

  3. I didn't know you did that! Isn't it sweet?!

  4. Lovely postcard!
Yes, I believe most people that paint have their share of paintings that didn't go the way they were supposed to. That is art.

  5. That would be great to get a handmade postcard in the mail. But I don't know how you do one every month. It must keep you so busy with all the other art work you do, it is amazing to me.

  6. i love that idea of sharing fun to see eachother's creative talents and keep eachother inspired!

i ABSOLUTELYL have paintings that don't turn out right...more so than i would like...THAT'S FOR SURE!! but i find if i try to "force" anything out creatively it just never seems to work out the way i envisioned! i am anxious to see the painting you are working on. happy friday silke!

  7. oh what fun to share some postcards each month....that is a wonderful idea....I love it....and this piece is beautiful...and wow ...I have not tried 300 lb watercolour must be so thick ....

Exchanging postcards with a friend seems so stimulating. What a great idea! A lot is happening in the background behind the girl. Love it.

  10. I love my postcard!! I'm looking around my house for the perfect place to display it. Also, it did come through the mail unscathed. I was amazed, but then you told me about the varnish. Neat trick -- worked great.

I'm having fun with the postcard exchange. I have another out-of-state friend who also creates and mails postcards to me. Try it, blog readers! You'll be glad you did.

  11. Silke I think this is a wonderful and fun idea to do with a friend.

    I like your postcard.

  12. I totally understand the frustration and the painting over! How many times have I done that?!

  13. yes... this happened to me. As a matter of fact, in my old school we had a reuse pile. Where masterpieces gone awry could be reused. (we were short on canvas). Right now I am staring at a painting of mine that quite possible has 3 rejected works or art under it... Kinda cool!

  14. I love the indea of exchanging your postcard sized pieces of artwork each month - and loved hearing what the layers of your pcard were created from...
a dear friend of mine lives in your towntoo!
