In the end, there was only surrender
7 x 10 inch acrylic painting
Ok, friends, I am beyond excited about this little painting in my art journal!! Truly thrilled!!! Some time ago, I had looked through an old Somerset Studio magazine, which had an article by Misty Mawn on art journaling. (I think her art is actually on the cover of the current magazine.)
I was so entirely captivated by her art, her limited, soft palette, that I wanted to try something like it. So, this is my Misty Mawn inspired portrait, which is much like the portrait in the magazine and yet quite different, and I LOVE it!! I painted it on a coat of gesso covered by a thick layer of fiber paste (great stuff!!) mixed with Phthalo Turquoise. The texture is amazing and perfect for dry brush painting with heavy body acrylics!
The experimenting I am doing in my journal has been an eye opener for me. My "real" paintings have made me afraid to experiment and I don't know exactly why. And because of that, the joy I usually feel is eluding me. But in my journal, I feel like I did when I first started out.
This painting certainly made my heart skip a beat...
I can see Misty's inspiration in this painting and the joy you felt as you painted it. It is a lovely work of art.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful Silke!
ReplyDeleteI find that sometimes I look at a canvas and am afraid of *wasting* the canvas or paint (or whatever supplies) but piddling around on something that is not meant to produce a *finished* piece of art, well, the best result happen.
I think we all get our circuits crossed occasionally.
They uncross too! ;-)
Glad to see you doing women~~this face is quite expressive.
XXOO~~♥

I think it is great Silke! I'm thinking of subscribing to the magazine but it is so expensive. Maybe I'll check the library? See if they have some of the magazines. You did a great job.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is really something! I can see/sense so many emotions in her face. Whatever creative freedom your journal is giving you, it is certainly leading you in some interesting directions. I say, if you're enjoying it, stick with it! This is awesome.
ReplyDeleteHi Silke,
ReplyDeleteI also like this painting a lot!! A very expressive piece.
You mentioned being afraid of experimenting with your "real" paintings...so maybe this is the "real" type of painting you should do more of....?
I find when I paint or draw I am at my best when I do it for pure pleasure for me and no one else.
Silke, I have a little parcel for you but
need your address to send it to you.
Send me an e-mail with your addy ok?
Hugs and Warm Smiles,

I love Misty Mawn's work - so I love that you were inspired by her. This is a wonderful painting. Maybe you have been too concentrated on having a finished piece to show, when you are painting? Never mind the results - paint for your pleasure, follow your bliss! Experiment! I think you need to get out of your own way and cut loose.
ReplyDeleteTut mir leid, falls dies zu offen gesprochen ist, Silke.
This painting is beautiful Silke, you have created a beautiful misty mawn inspired art.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I have a soft spot for her art also. She is an awesome artist.
Lovely to hear from you also!
Loads of love!

silke i love how honest you are about your art. makes my heart happy when fellow artists get excited about the process, excited about the outcome. it's what it is all about and your not afraid to just put it out there.
ReplyDeletebig hugs to you! this is a wonderful, soulful painting!! xo
Silke, this is really gorgeous! I LOVE the soft palette and the look of contemplation on the girl's face. How long ago did that article appear? I only just started reading Somerset Studio last year. :) Great work!!!! Theresa
