Learning a few things...

After drawing class today, I started thinking about what I am learning so far... First of all PATIENCE, not my strong suit! Doing a contour drawing (outlines only) of a big and complicated still life takes time! Lots of time!! But I am progressing nicely as you can see from the little snippet above.
The class is also teaching me how to look at things, deeply look at things! And ... I observe from the ten people in class that we not only all have our very unique perspective, but also interpret and express what we see like nobody else can.

That's creativity for you, no matter what shape it takes! Each one of us unique and with a point of view that cannot be expressed by anybody else.
That leads me to think that if we don't make our personal mark (out of fear or for whatever reason), the world will have lost something that nobody else can supply.

So, go make your mark today! We will all benefit!!

P.S. The lovely Robin of Open Eyes, Open Mind, Open Heart  just left this great quote in her comment, which seems to sum it all up perfectly:

"Self-expression is the primary sacrament of the universe. Whatever you feel deeply demands to be given form and released."

Brian Swimme
The Universe is a Green Dragon

P.P.S. The hearts are for all of you...

  1. Your drawing is wonderful!! Here is a favorite quote of mine (you may have already heard it somewhere).

  2. I had a discussion about this very subject with my friends in the mixed media group at our local library on Saturday. We were talking about the critical voice in our heads, and how "good" is a totally subjective concept. Everyone has something to offer, and there is an audience for everyone's art. It's all about self-expression and connection, and you are a good example for us of how someone can happily use art for self-expression, self-exploration and (via the blog especially) connection. ☺

  3. Okay, I would have been on my last nerve doing the contour of that still life....I am sure it would have involved a straight jacket at some point! ;-D
But good for YOU getting through it!
One of the most interesting things in a drawing class is seeing how everyone processes the same situation. I think volumes can be learned from that alone.
In other words, we are not carbon copies but unique with a specific voice to offer.

  4. Silke, I am enjoying watching you make your personal mark! I love how you are diving right in and trying (and sharing) all these new adventures - whether it be in the creative realm or the philosophical.

  5. Beautiful post Silke! Since I have started on my journey with art I notice that I don't look at anything the same anymore. I see photographs I could capture, or a scene I could paint noticing the perspective much more in what I am looking at. It is not just a sky or mountain to me anymore. . . it is art. :)

Thanks for the inspiration once again! xo

  6. Yep! We all have our own perspective...uniquely our own, but also can share the things about ourselves that are so much alike! :-) I love your sketched still life so far. Can't wait to see how it develops. :-)

  7. oh silke!! i am in love with that quote. i feel like i'm really starting to create myself as an artist. each and every painting i learn more and become more bold and creative with my brush stroke. it's freeing and healing and so beautiful to leave just a little of yourself for others to enjoy.

  8. I just clicked on your blog thru KJ - and saw your statement about picking up a paintbrush one day and just starting - and wow - that is what happened to me. I barely had art in my life, one day I started creating and haven't looked back. And I too love faces...all kinds of faces, women, men - amazing! Lovely to meet you, Mim
