Illustration Friday - Adrift

adrift in her own thoughts

Yesterday, I discovered this piece of acrylic paper (6 x 6 inches), I had prepared with a background collage of pretty papers and a layer of tissue paper. So, I took it and painted another girl with head in hand. Love her!!

I worked fairly transparently so you can still see some of the papers showing through. After all the pastel paintings, it was fun picking up acrylics again. But then, right after I finished her, I started on another pastel. Can you tell I am hooked?

Thank you all so much for your comments on our Charleston photo. It's so much fun to share our adventures with you!

  2. This is a lovely piece & quite different from what you've been doing. I am crazy about the collaged background! The colors here are very pretty, and I like the pensive expression on this woman's face. You're showing us that you're a versatile artist! You go, girl!

  4. Hi Silke,

The color and texture in this piece is wonderful. Those bits of red/pink that are so intense frame and accentuate the face, adding a glow to the skin. The bit of blue balances the green----the composition on this is perfect!
I must say that this piece says a lot.....very contemplative, so much texture for the eye to explore.
    Bravo!

    XXOO!!

  6. Good morning! Another thinker! I don't know why I am drawn to paintings where women rest their heads on their hands. The eyes of your women have a determined look. Do you find it easy to draw them? When I paint I always draw the face first. If I can't get the eyes and lips I can't go on. I have chucked huge painting projects just because I can't do the eyes. That's when I start going through the motions. Hahahaa! I think Anne calls it "THe Zone". I have spent days just drawing or painting the face, even with pen drawings.

Of course you make it look so easy but how long did this take?

It's cold and freezing here today, though no snow. Poor Manon! I think of her and all that snow. I must remember to bring my vest when I walk.

Have a wonderful day Silke. I smile at work when I remember you.

  7. Oh my goodness....I love her! So many thoughts come to mind looking at her. It's snowing here right now; she could be sitting at the window watching the beauty of the snow; daydreaming over a wonderful book or poem; imagining what her future holds before her...so many things. Lovely work. :D

  15. Very nice Silke.:) I love that you added a hand and the way the shoulder is up a little, the ear too...very realistic. Actually this might be one of my favorites...

It looks like you had a great time in Charleston, even with the snow. I love the old buildings and if I could have a dream house it would be one of those old southern houses with the pillars similar to the one in your picture...Ah to be rich. You got me to thinking about an old Patrick Swayze movie that I had forgotten about...North and South I believe it was called. Actually I think it was a TV mini series, I'll have to look it up.

  25. There's great vigour in this work. I think it's a good direction to be taking. To work with the accidents of texture and see where they lead you is great for inspiration. Just like Max Ernst and frottage.

The 'eyes' have it in this one, far-away-eyes.

    :)

    cheers

  30. She's got that faraway look in her eye. You captured it so very well! And I love the way you've rendered her nose. And the background is lovely.

No need to Netflix Love Boat. Just a fluff show from long ago. :)

  34. i think she's thinking, 'what shall i do with my life now?"

i get tickled thinking about tissue paper as the background here! boy you experiment so much, silke, better and better and deeper and truer every time. i would now recognize your women even if i didn't know you were the artist. that only took me what, three weeks? you have your own signature.

i know these women have more to say, more emotions to reveal. anticipation abounds!

    :)

  37. Beautiful! .... and only on a 6 x 6 inches!

Not being an artist myself - I enjoy art by the increasing number of artists that come into my life - I am always amazed at the small pieces of art. Recently visited the Getty (AMAZING - a whole day and not anywhere enough time) and the Rembrandt drawings were on tour. Some of them were indeed as small as I venture 6 x 6 inches, and the detail! I had seen prints of these very same drawings and had always thought that they were quite a bit larger!

Silke, I am so delighted as are many from the sounds of the comments, that you have taken up art yourself. It seems that it was always in you and you brought it out at just the right time. Congratulations on your continued progress ...and yes! I think the girl is beautiful and the collage which shows a tad beneath adds to the charm!

    best..............valentina
