Impressions from Berlin

The Wannsee
Happy 1. of October! Can you believe it?! Excuse me ~ where has September gone?!
The Max Liebermann Villa
Before we get deep into the Holiday Season, I thought I'd show you some more pictures from my recent trip to Germany.  If I wait any longer, they'll be old news...
My dad and I drove to Berlin for a couple of days of sightseeing there. It had been a few years since I had been there and it was every bit as beautiful as I remembered.
It amazes me how a big city can have such large areas of nature, woods and lakes.
My dad has friends who live in Berlin and they are always the best tour guides.
We saw amazing art exhibits, beautiful buildings, ate great food and enjoyed everything with sunshine and blue skies.

Daniel and I had been to both West and East Berlin several times before the wall came down. When you are in this modern and bustling city now, it is strange to remember what it was like before.

Berlin Cathedral
The cathedral had been under construction last time we visited.

Inside the "New Museum", which houses the famous and beautiful bust of Queen Nefertiti.
Old ruins were incorporated into the modern structure.
The New Museum fascinated me in that the ruins that were left after it was badly damaged during WWII were preserved and integrated into the modern structure.

It was beautiful!

This was the view from on top of the Humboldt Box, which is worth reading about here.

On the way home, we stopped in Magdeburg, which was such a surprise to both of us. I'll share pictures from that day in another post!
On the home front, Daniel is trying hard to get over a very persistent respiratory virus and I am deep into my paints again. I'm painting something completely different for me. It has me so excited that I've been having trouble going to sleep at night because I keep thinking about it. That is the good kind of insomnia...

And as soon as I post this, I am off to my studio again. We are having dreary days. I wish I could say cool and fall-like, but we are expecting a humid 87℉ or 30℃again today. A perfect day to play with paints!

Wishing you a most wonderful start to your week!

  1. Great pictures, Silke! In 2005, I went to see Berlin for the first (and so far, only) time in my life. I was glad for having the chance to come "face to face" with Queen Nefertiti, a work of art I have admired since childhood. Most impressive for us had been a visit to the top of the Fernsehturm at night time and look across the nightly Berlin.

    1. I think the last time I had been to Berlin had been 10 years ago or so, Meike. And it was amazing to see how much had changed again. How many of the old buildings were now restored and open to the public. We did not see the city at night though from above - next time!

    2. Oh, yes, I agree with you, seeing Nefertiti was an extra boon - that bust is simply exquisite! :)

  2. Super - what a great tour.

I came across Käthe Kollwitz's work about ten years ago and love it. So moving and deep.

    1. I'm with you on Käthe Kollwitz's work. And I thought it was so fitting that they chose one of her statues for this building that I think has always been a memorial.

  5. Beautiful photos, as usual, Silke. And the Holocaust Memorial reminded me of my religion's history in Germany. It was a very sad time. It's good to know that there is a reminder of it. Friends of mine have visited the Holocaust Memorial in Washington. They said the experience was very powerful...Tell Daniel I hope he feels better soon. I'm still getting over a terrible virus I got over two weeks ago!! Fluids, vitamin C and tea with lemon helped me tremendously, but it was still slow going!

    1. Thank you, Deb. Yes, there are such dark times in so many cultures and countries and it's always interesting to see how these times are memorialized in different places so that we don't forget what happened.

Daniel still isn't feeling great but I guess with this virus you just have to bide your time and ask it nicely to please go away. I'm just grateful I haven't gotten it! And I hope it stays that way...

I hope you are feeling all better!!! xoxo Silke

Alles Liebe, Silke
