From Class this Morning

I had my life drawing class this morning with a really great model. His face was a joy to draw.
Here's the funny part I never share. Every class I have the same internal dialogue:
At the beginning of the class when I first see the model: "Oh, my god, I can draw him. No way. That's too hard."
Then I sit down completely overwhelmed by the empty paper in front of me and think: "Ok, start somewhere. Just start. You can't be the only one sitting at your easel not drawing."
Ok, so I start somewhere, usually with a dark shadow. This time I started under the bottom lip and just observed and drew from there.

And after about three minutes (3!!): "Oh, that looks awful. It doesn't look at all like him." Well, of course not! He didn't even have lips yet or eyes or a nose.
Usually after that I get absorbed and the chatter in my head stops until the end of class. And that, dear friends, is how I constantly entertain myself...

Wishing you a beautiful day filled with everything you love!

  5. I've never taken an art class.

But you make it sound like so much fun. Even your beginning "worries," are fun to read.

And I'm sure your drawing is almost a photo-like rendition of his face. Just amazing.

  8. Hi Silke, believe it or not I'm still wandering around the BYG party blog by blog. Boy it's taking some time to visit people, isn't it? Maybe I just don't have enough time. (what ever happened to my new year's resolution to stop running out of time and start running into it instead?) Anyway, I paint as well but I can't do portraiture for toffee. You've done an excellent job on this face. Nicely done. Well, I hope your week is shaping up to be a lovely one. Nice to come visit and I'm off now to have a peek at some more of your blog and figure out how to follow. :)

  9. Thank you for giving us an insight into the actual process of how a portrait starts from an empty sheet of paper and develops into something so good!
