Sketches

There's one component from my now past drawing class that I hadn't shown you yet - sketches from my sketchbook. As part of our homework, we had to turn in 20 sketches every week for 8 weeks.
160 sketches total!
Each one was supposed to be drawn with ink (no erasing) and not take longer than 30 seconds to one minute.
Some weeks I enjoyed it and others not so much,
but I could definitely tell that my sketches were getting better as the weeks went on.
One thing it is teaching me is to see the essence of what I want to draw in just a few seconds.
No details, just the feel of it.

And if it doesn't look right (like Ramses who looks like a fox in the sketch below), that's fine. There was no grade for this so it really gave us great freedom to just dive right in.
Today I am practicing my art in the kitchen as I am planning to bake quite a few things to have on hand in the freezer. Two loaves of my favorite bread (click here to view a past post I did on it) are already in the oven.

Tonight, we'll have fresh bread with boursin cheese and ripe tomatoes from the garden for dinner. And a salad to go with it. It's one of my favorite summer meals...

  1. Very nice...the sketches. And just don't tell anyone it's not a fox! LOL

  2. *IF* and *WHEN* I actually sketch?
It's pretty much what you have above. I do enough to remember what I need, then move on.
I think the loose sketches help you to be more creative later; not bogged down in details you may not need, or may not serve your best interests.
And we all know Ramses is a foxy cat! ;-)

  6. Brava! From where I'm standing, doing these sketches took guts. Pen? No erasing? Sixty seconds? It's heartening to hear that you gained confidence and skill as time went on. I think this is something I'd like to do this summer. I just HOPE I can see improvement in my sketches too. Happy baking! Smells goooooood. :)

  9. Silke I've been having so much trouble commenting on blog posts that I haven't for a while. I did a quick run through of your posts today and am WOWED by your artwork! I'm thrilled you took that drawing class as it seems to have unleashed more of your creativity. Love the sketches, LOVE your buttons and contour drawings. What a truly inspiring teacher you have. Your garden sounds like heaven and the bird shots...awesome.
