Sketch for New Painting

After my last post I did go up to my studio to start on a new painting on the canvas board I prepped with plaster of paris (click here to see). I LOVE the surface after I sanding it for a bit and giving it a layer of gesso.

And I like the sketch just fine and am looking forward to doing the underpainting, but somehow I'm not feeling the inspiration that usually takes a hold of me.

I feel as though I've lost my art mojo... and it's freaking me out a little bit.

So, my fellow creatives, here's my question to you: What do you do to get your inspiration back?

  1. To get my inspiration back...I usually take a walk outside and get in nature and when I return to the studio I feel refreshed or I'll do some spontaneous sketching in my sketchbook. Sometimes I'll paint with my left hand rather than my usual right hand. Or I'll use a completely different medium like chalk or watercolor instead of acrylic and just play with those new mediums for awhile and have fun! The best idea is to forget about what you think you're supposed to be painting and just play!

  3. Loving your lady already with the amazing textures. Perhaps you would let me know how things turn out with your missing art mojo as have lost mine as well and its pretty scary. x

  4. I've been following your blog for awhile now. You haven't lost your art mojo - there is art in everything you do - it shows up not only in your art but also in your writing and your photos. You can't lose something so deeply imbedded. Just relax - it's still there.

  5. I love the way this piece is looking so far. And I agree with Lindy: one of the best things you could do is just let go of any negative/lackful thoughts about art and get absorbed in something else. Nature always heals and soothes me so I like to head outside, prefereably to the beach. But a good book or a movie can be helpful at distracting me too. Have you ever seen the movie about Isaac Mizrahi? It follows him as he creates a fashion collection. That inspires me. Also the movie about Bill Cunningham, the style on the street photographer for the NY Times. Sometimes you have to tune out of the ordinary to tune back into your creative side.
