Watercolor - WIP

Today in class, I had to finally put the first watercolor washes on this drawing/painting. I say "had to" because I am so cautious when it comes to those things where I could really mess up. There are some students in my class who jump right in and were painting with watercolor last class already. I admire that!

I did my outline drawing first and then today I couldn't put it off any longer - I had to apply watercolor, sink or swim. And you know what? So far so good! I put down about three layers and am starting to see some nice values. I can already tell that I'm going to have fun working on some of the more detailed areas. Plus, I am amazed how different it is to paint with watercolor on really good paper rather than in our sketchbooks.

In other news, it looks like hurricane Irene is going to miss us here in Savannah and I really hope it won't make landfall at all. Then this afternoon, I heard that there was a pretty big earthquake in Virginia - I hope all of you are all alright in that area.

That said, I wish you all a peaceful Tuesday!

  1. You're doing a fantastic job with watercolor Silke! You're getting great form and still keeping the watercolor translucent. I love it!

  2. Good paper is EVERYTHING. I always hate to see young students fighting with cruddy paper and *student grade* paints because it just is not the same.
The painting looks great~~I think you'll have a winner here Silke!
    That's my department.... ;-)

  3. This painting is really lookin' good! ☺

  4. Have fun with the watercolors, do not be afraid!!!

  5. another medium for silke! yay!

i FELT that earthquake today and it scared the bejeezers out of me. i was at a client's and first i and the couch shook, then my client and her chair, then her hutch. good that it was over before i panicked!

you and mim are my inspiration for 2011, silke ♥

  6. Hey, we felt the quake up here too in Canada!

Love the washes...can't wait to see how it turns out...and you're right....good watercolour paper is TOTALLY better!

  7. Toll Silke! Ich bin immer wieder begeistert! Gut, dass der Sturm wahrscheinlich vorbei geht!
    Liebe Grüße, bis bald

  8. I just love that you're sharing this journey with us. It's so inspiring to see you learn and accomplish all these different techniques.

  9. I know the feeling, I am so cautious when I have to use watercolor or paints, I hate making mistakes with my artwork, something I definitely have to work on!
    Thanks for sharing your journey.
    Hugs and blessings

  10. Lovely job on the watercolor, Silke...It is a bit intimidating putting down that first wash, isn't it? But then, hey, it's only paper right and there are tons of ways to "fix" any little mistakes. Glad you are enjoying it :-)

  11. This is looking really really lovely, Silke! Can't wait to see the finished piece!
